Stepping back, Back to the Future opened on July 3, 1985 and grossed U.S. $210 million at the U.S. box office, making it the highest grossing American film of 1985. The film was followed by two sequels: Back to the Future Part II in 1989 and Back to the Future Part III in1990, forming the trilogy.
In 2006, Back to the Future was voted the 20th greatest film ever made by readers of Empire.
